Wild Caught

Found in large numbers in the inshore waters around Tasmania, Flathead are a bottom dwelling fish easily distinguished from other fish by their long, narrow body and broad flattened head. Predominantly a sandy brown colour above and white below, with occasional spotting, scales are present though they are covered with protective slime. These bottom dwellers prefer shallow waters between 0-25 metres deep, weed free with a sandy bottom. Flathead can grow up to 45cm in length and 3kg in weight. Relatively easy to catch, they are the most commonly caught recreational species in Tasmania – making up two-thirds of all fish caught.
They have a low oil content, and a pleasant, sweet flavour. They’re a fine textured flesh which can be prone to drying out with some cooking methods but are moist and flaky when cooked in batter. They also retain moisture well when cooked as a whole fish. Popular as fish and chips.
